60th Anniversary of The March on Washington
Reflection Special Edition

On August 26th, 2023, tens of thousands gathered from across the United States and Black America to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The March on Washington. As young and elder alike gathered at the Lincoln Memorial, a new fight began for the next generation to carry the torch for Civil Rights and equality for all.

Looking down from heaven, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would ask the question: Is America better off 60 years after my original speech in August 1963? Why are conservatives trying to rewrite Black History by banning books which teach American History? Civil Rights attorney and activist Benjamin Crump challenged the audience at the 2023 March on Washington to fight the banning of books that highlight African American history across this country. Given all the inventions that African Americans have contributed to this society called the United States of America, this nation would not exist if we removed all of those inventions from the world!

Garrett Morgan’s inventions of the traffic light and gas mask for the military, Shirley Jackson’s invention of the scanning systems for grocery stores and the compact disc are just a few examples of modern-day inventions which have made lives of people around the world much easier. Mrs. Gladys West invented the GPS system that the world relies on for navigation while Nathaniel Alexander invented the folding chair. These are just a few African American trailblazers who have shared their inventions to make not only America great but the world extraordinary. Innovations in the medical field by Dr. Charles Drew–who invented the procedure to process blood plasma, Dr. Alexa Cannady–the first African American neurosurgeon, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams–who performed the first open heart surgery and Patricia Bath–inventor of a laser to remove eye cataracts, show the creative ideas and contributions which make Black Americans vital to this country we call America. The banning of books would have changed the lives of these great pioneers and countless others from achieving their goals and those of future generations. America can choose to ignore all the great accomplishments African Americans have made to the United States of America or be seen as a foul for failing to acknowledge its past, present and future.

A crucial member to the success of the March on Washington was fearless civil rights activist and organizer Bayard Rustin–who fought for civil rights and equality for the Black community as well as the LBGTQ community. Conservatives across the United States and globally are challenging the rights of marginalized people to exist. Having a diverse nation of people with different cultures will hopefully make us a more inclusive and understanding nation. Whatever your beliefs are, this is a call to action by the new generation of civil rights activists and equality leaders. Failure to unite as a unified people will result in separate but unequal and serve as a win for conservatives throughout the world including the United States of America.
